Choose Ping'an or Dazhai for your first Longji Rice Terraces visit. Compare walking, cable-car options, luggage, weather and a realistic day trip from Guilin.
Guilin planning works best when hotel area, transfer timing, meal stops, guide hours, and walking level are considered together.
“Longji Rice Terraces” is not one viewpoint at the end of one road. For a first visit from Guilin, the useful choice is often Ping'an (平安寨) or Jinkeng–Dazhai (金坑·大寨). Both are within the Longji area in Longsheng, but they lead to different walking, transfer and overnight plans. Decide which experience matters before asking a driver simply to take you to “Longji.”
Short answer: choose Ping'an for a village-and-viewpoint walk when your group is comfortable with uphill paths. Choose Dazhai if you want to explore a Red Yao village and the wider Jinkeng landscape, or if a currently operating cable car to a viewpoint would help your group. A cable car does not make the whole village or every viewpoint step-free. On a normal day trip, give one area proper time rather than trying to tick off both.
What are the two areas?
Ping'an is associated with Zhuang village life and its terraced slopes. A Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism route description lists the Ping'an Zhuang terraces and Dazhai Yao terraces as distinct parts of Longji. The fields are working land, not a permanent golden backdrop. Ping'an's commonly discussed viewpoints include Seven Stars with the Moon and Nine Dragons and Five Tigers; these are separate walking goals, not one roadside platform.

Jinkeng is the larger terrace area around Dazhai and neighboring Red Yao communities. UN Tourism's Dazhai profile describes rice-terrace agriculture, village culture and cable-car sightseeing; it recognized Dazhai as a Best Tourism Village in 2022. That recognition does not tell you whether the cable car operates on your particular travel date, where your hotel sits, or which paths are open.

Which one fits your group?
- You want a focused first day: select one village, one or two attainable viewpoints and a meal. Ping'an is a good fit when walking through the village is part of the appeal; Dazhai is a good fit when Jinkeng's broader setting is the reason for the detour.
- You have limited walking capacity: investigate Dazhai's cable-car option for the viewpoint it serves, but ask about the path from parking to the station, steps at the top, queues and the return. If stairs are a serious barrier, obtain a current, route-specific accessibility answer before booking either area.
- You plan a hike: there are village-to-village routes, but do not mistake a marked walking route for a short sightseeing shortcut. A Guilin hiking overview describes both local walks and a Ping'an–Dazhai hike. That longer route should be a deliberate hiking day, with current trail information, weather and a pickup plan.
- You want a sunrise or slower village stay: choose accommodation only after checking its precise village and how luggage reaches it. “Longji hotel” is not a useful pickup address in a multi-village scenic area.
How to plan a Guilin day trip
Start by giving your driver or guide the specific village or parking area, not just the scenic-area name. Then allow for the road journey, entry arrangements, the last section from drop-off, walking, lunch and the return. Do not treat an online city-to-Longji drive estimate as the time from your hotel to a particular viewpoint. Starting in Yangshuo adds another transfer leg; a Li River cruise and a proper Longji walk should not be squeezed into the same standard sightseeing day.
For a one-day outing, use this sequence: leave Guilin with a clear destination; arrive and confirm the return meeting point; walk only the chosen viewpoint loop; take a meal break; and leave buffer for the mountain road back. A second village is an optional extension only if the weather, road and group pace allow it. Our Guilin itinerary-choice guide compares Longji with a Li River/Yangshuo day, while the four-day private route shows how it can sit within a longer trip. Neither fixes the day's admission or cable-car status.
Steps, luggage and weather matter more than a photo
The villages are built on slopes. Expect uneven surfaces and changes in elevation even if you are not undertaking a formal hike. Keep large suitcases in the vehicle or confirm a hotel transfer arrangement instead of assuming they can roll to the room. For children, older travelers or anyone with knee or balance concerns, agree on a realistic turnaround point before starting uphill. In rain, wet stone and earth paths call for shoes with grip and a more modest walking goal.
Terrace color depends on cultivation and weather. Water-filled fields, green growth, golden rice and post-harvest stubble are different phases; none can be guaranteed by a calendar label. The cover photograph was taken in October 2023 and the village photographs on other dates. See our Guilin seasonal guide for trip-style tradeoffs, and keep the rainy-day backup guide handy if views are clouded.
What to confirm before paying
- Which village, entrance, parking point and viewpoints are included?
- Is a cable-car ride relevant to your chosen route, operating on the date, and priced separately?
- How far can the vehicle go, and how will luggage reach any overnight hotel?
- What walking surfaces and steps remain for the least mobile traveler?
- Where and when will your driver meet you, and what is the weather fallback?
Send us your Guilin or Yangshuo hotel, travel date, group size and the walking level of the least mobile person. We can then build a private visit around the appropriate village instead of selling a vague “Longji stop” that may not fit your group.
