Classic First Trip

Use Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai when travelers want the clearest first-time China route.

Family & Panda Pace

Chengdu can slow the trip down with pandas, food, teahouses, and easier flexible days after heavier sightseeing cities.

Scenery Extension

Choose Guilin, Zhangjiajie, or Yunnan when the trip needs landscape, old towns, or softer outdoor time.

How to choose China destinations

For most private China trips, the best destination list starts with travel pace rather than a long wish list. A 7-day trip usually needs two main cities. A 10-day trip can handle three strong stops. A 12- to 14-day trip can add a scenic or food-focused extension without making every day feel like a transfer day.

If this is your first China visit, start with the classic role of each city: Beijing for imperial history and the Great Wall, Xi'an for the Terracotta Warriors and early Chinese history, Shanghai for modern contrast and smoother arrival or departure days. Then add one extension if time allows: Chengdu for pandas and Sichuan food, Guilin for Li River scenery, Zhangjiajie for mountain landscapes, or Yunnan for old towns and slower highland culture.

When comparing cities, think about arrival city, hotel changes, walking level, weather, food preferences, and whether your group includes children or senior travelers. The first-time China planning guide and travel planning checklist can help turn these destination ideas into a realistic route.
